4 Pedestrian Safety Tips to Follow

Whether you regularly walk to work or make the drive to work every day, pedestrians and drivers have to work together to keep the roadways and themselves safe. Below are four pedestrian safety tips that we should all be aware of and follow.

  1. First and foremost, if you are a pedestrian, it is important to always be aware of your surroundings. Even, if you are not on a busy street, it is important to stay aware of the potential traffic around you. Always make yourself visible to avoid being hidden from nearby drivers and be predictable.
  2.  Use the sidewalks, whenever possible. While there are not always sidewalks present, it is important to use them anytime they are present. Traveling on a sidewalk will keep you safely out of the way of drivers on the roadways.
  3. When you need to cross a street, always use a crosswalk. Additionally, when crossing at a crosswalk, always follow the traffic signs to avoid crossing while cars are present.
  4. While walking in an area where cars are present, avoid using cell phones and music players. Listening to music or talking on the phone can prevent you from hearing oncoming traffic. Additionally, texting while walking can also be a distraction and should be avoided, especially if you are in a busy area.

Drivers also have a responsibility to follow pedestrian safety tips. If you are driving in an area with pedestrians present, always be aware and take extra precautions before crossing intersections and making turns. Remember, always yield to pedestrians and slow down in certain areas where pedestrians are often present, such as schools and neighborhoods.
