Holiday Travel Safety Tips

The holiday season is in full swing, which means lots of holiday shopping and traveling to visit family and friends. During this time of the year it is important to be aware of the dangers that come along with busy roads.

During the holiday season, there are many factors that cause more accidents and traffic problems, compared to other times of the year. Busy roads due to traffic around malls and shopping centers can cause minor accidents. When you are traveling out to do your holiday shopping be sure to stay aware of the traffic around you, as well as pedestrians.

Highways can also be a problem around the holiday season due to the large number of people who have to travel to see their loved ones on the holiday. According to AAA, “98.6 million Americans traveled 50 miles or more from home during the holidays last year.” When traveling over the holiday season there are a few things to keep in mind in order to keep you and your family safe while traveling. Always be sure to check your vehicle before getting on the road. Check your tires, and top-off fluids, check your brakes, and put together an emergency kit for your car before hitting the road. Another way to be prepared is to plan ahead. Planning out your travel times can help you avoid hitting large cities during rush hour times. Lastly, to keep your trip running smoothly make sure that the driver is able to take breaks and has another passenger helping them with directions, if needed.

Another major problem during the holiday season is drinking and driving. Alcohol plays a major role in many holiday car accidents, as many people drive home from holiday parties after having too much to drink. According to AAA, “drinking violations increase 33% between the Wednesday before Thanksgiving through January 2.” If you are going to be attending holiday parties and will be drinking, be sure to plan ahead to have someone else drive, and encourage your family and friends to do the same.
