What to Do After a Slip-and-Fall Accident

After a slip-and-fall accident on someone else’s property, you may be unsure of what to do next and what you are entitled to. Business and property owners have a responsibility to keep their property in a safe condition that is free from hazards that can cause injuries. If you find yourself injured as a result of a slip-and-fall accident here is a list of things that you should do:

  • Immediately after the accident, notify the owners of the premises or an employee, and make sure to get the name of the person you talk to.
  • Request and fill-out an Incident Report. As you’re filling out the report, be as descriptive as possible. Be sure to note any liquid or other material that caused you to fall and include the type of shoes you were wearing at the time of the injury. You also want to make sure that you get a copy of the incident report and find out who will be contacting you regarding the accident.
  • Take pictures of the area where you fell and what caused the accident.
  • If you are hurting immediately following the accident, seek medical treatment. If the pain does not occur until hours or days after the accident, it is still important to seek medical treatment to have records of your injuries.

Following a slip-and-fall accident, make sure to follow these steps to ensure you have the proper documentation of the incident. Once these steps are complete, it may be time to call a personal injury lawyer who can help walk you through your rights.
